Map Projections in Mapcreator

This documentation is always evolving.

Mapcreator uses the Mercator projection as the default map projection. This is a widely used and known projection, but there are other options available.

Alternative Projections

Mapcreator offers several projection options to suit different use cases better:

Globe View
You can enable Globe View via your Project Settings. This projection provides a 3D-like spherical representation of the Earth. It supports export in SVG, PNG, and PDF formats. Don’t see the Globe? Zoom out to at least level 5 for it to be visible.

Pro tip: SVG exports from a globe view are not commonly supported in most cases, but you can with Mapcreator!

United States and Canada Projections

We provide region-specific projections to better represent the spatial distribution of areas in the U.S. and Canada:

  • United States – Albers projection
Available under: United States - 51 States and Territories (Albers)

  • Canada – Lambert projection
Available under: Canada - 13 Federal Election Provinces (Lambert)

To use these projections correctly, change your map style to Choropleth. This ensures that the selected regions display without overlapping the standard map base. The Choropleth style removes base map data and only shows the elements you’ve added. If you don’t want to use or have access to a Choropleth mapstyle, it is also easy to disable all other elements from layers.
