What does my spreadsheet need to look like so I can import it?

This documentation is always evolving.

This article focuses on Mapcreator Next and its features. For details about the previous version of Mapcreator, click here.

You can upload a spreadsheet with locations to automatically place icons and labels on the map. To make the most of spreadsheet import, you should format your file correctly so Mapcreator can read it properly and optimize your work.

Address information

First of all, make sure to add columns with the desired locations. Mapcreator supports several formats:
1. Coordinates. You can either add separate columns for Latitude and Longitude, or use a single column where the values are separated by a comma or semicolon.

1 coordinates

2. Address. The address can be provided in a single column or divided into several columns (e.g., country, city, street, house number). Please try to be as specific as possible, since some locations may have similar names. Including the city and country helps avoid confusion.

2 addressesYou can also use broader location types such as a country, region, city, or even a zipcode. In that case, the icon will be placed at the center of that location.

Pro tip: You can import up to 1.000 locations if you are using addresses. If you use coordinates instead, there is no limit. You can find a tool to convert your addresses into coordinates here.

When importing your spreadsheet, you need to select which columns correspond to coordinates or address.

If Latitude and Longitude are combined in a single column, choose ‘’Coordinates’’ from the drop-down.

3 match coordinates

If Latitude and Longitude are in separate columns, select the appropriate column type for each.

4 match lat long

If the address is spread over multiple columns, just select ‘’Address’’ from the dropdown for each column.

5 match address
If your spreadsheet doesn't have column headers, make sure to turn off the “Does your spreadsheet contain column headers” option. You will then be able to match your data using column names like ‘’Column A’’, ‘’Column B’’, etc.

6 no headers

Colors and labels

You can also include additional details such as icon and text colors, as well as text content to avoid manual input later. Each piece of information should be placed in a separate column, with clear headers of your choice. Learn more here
